Increased interest in vegetarian diet during the pandemic
Since the pandemic broke out about six months ago, many have had more time to take care of themselves and think about their health. In a new Novus survey conducted by Simple Feast, it also becomes clear that interest in vegetarian and vegan diets has increased. In the survey, every fourth person answers that they have gained an increased interest in vegan food during the past six months. Only eight percent say they have a reduced interest in eating vegetarian or vegan and 66 percent answer that it is unchanged.
Largest increase among women and young people
The interest is increasing most among those aged 18-29, where as many as 35 percent are more interested in vegetarian and vegan food now compared to before the pandemic. Women also stand out in the statistics, 29 percent are more open to choosing vego now compared to six months ago. Among men, the figure is 20 percent.
– Regardless of whether the increased vegan interest is due to the corona pandemic or not, it is positive from all aspects that more people want to eat plant-based today compared to six months ago. Personally, I actually think that it is largely due to sustainability and health issues having been given so much space since Corona broke out, says Maximillian Lundin, Sweden manager at Simple Feast.
Environmental reasons and health reasons are the main reasons for the increased interest
Of those who have developed an increased interest in vegan food, just over four out of ten (42%) state environmental reasons as the main reason. One in three (32%) answer that the increased interest is based on health reasons.
– There are several reasons to start eating more vegan and vegetarian – which more and more people realize. What I want to encourage more people to do is not get stuck in the fact that it is either black or white, you do not have to be vegan overnight for it to be worth anything. If you eat plant-based three days a week, for example, you already make a big difference both for the climate and for yourself, says Maximillian Lundin.
