The new The Wood Hotel by Elite – one of the world’s tallest wooden buildings

In October 2021, The Wood Hotel by Elite opens the doors to Norrland’s latest international hotel destination. Located in Skellefteå, which in recent years has become a thriving epicenter for greentech, the hotel’s wooden building is designed with a strong focus on sustainability, and the ambition to be carbon neutral within the first five years. In the borderland between nature and innovation, The Wood Hotel by Elite offers the very best of Scandinavia – complete with spa, restaurants and a panoramic view of the midnight sun and northern lights.

Located in one of the world’s tallest timber buildings, The Wood Hotel by Elite is a tribute to Skellefteå’s local history of forestry and timber construction. The building was designed by White Architects and extends 20 floors and 75 meters above the ground, with everything you need to escape reality. The hotel has 205 carefully designed hotel rooms, three restaurants as well as a rooftop bar and spa with a spectacular panoramic view of the city and its surroundings. The building also houses a completely new cultural center where both guests and locals can take part in a museum, galleries, a theater, concert stages and Skellefteå’s new city library.

The Wood Hotel becomes Elite Group’s first independent destination hotel and defines a new era for the group, which has built its well-known brand by transforming historic landmarks around Sweden into prestigious hotels. Founded in 1983 by Bicky Chakraborty, and with hotels in 19 cities, Elite Group is still run as a family-owned company. Caroline Chakraborty – Bicky’s daughter – has taken an active role in developing the group’s new concept hotel – including The Wood Hotel by Elite.

“I grew up surrounded by our fantastic hotels, all of which are defined by pride and a lot of soul. It has been important for me to get that feeling also at The Wood Hotel by Elite, which will be one of our first hotels in a completely newly established building. The concept has been based a lot on the region’s history and tradition, which is also highly present in the magnificent architecture, ”says Caroline Chakraborty.

“The Wood Hotel by Elite is inspired by northern Sweden’s unique nature, but also by Skellefteå’s position as a contemporary hub for progressive and green technical solutions. Here we want to create memorable experiences and evoke a sense of hope for what the future can bring. We want to encourage our guests to explore new ideas, whether it is in peace and quiet inside their rooms, or out on an adventure on the northern plains. ”

Nature is constantly present at The Wood Hotel by Elite. Wood from the local forests literally forms the core of all wall constructions, which creates a feeling of calm and serenity. Even before its completion, the building has already been awarded international prizes for its pioneering architecture. The wooden construction has been designed to be a model in modern, sustainable architecture, designed to cope with northern Sweden’s challenging weather conditions while remaining energy efficient. The house’s roof garden acts as insulation from cold, heat and noise, while preserving the biological diversity and delaying the drainage of water. The roof also has solar cells, which with the help of batteries can store energy to minimize the building’s energy impact.
